If you are planning on doing some sightseeing in Oslo, I recommend you buy the Oslo Card. The price is not bad at all (surprisingly), and public transport (ferries, buses, trains, trams; that alone costs over 60 NOK - $10 - for 24 hours) is included, as well as the entrance fees to all the major sights and museums. If you're only going to 2-3 museums and will be using public transport for more than 3 trips, you get good value for money. See VisitOslo.com  for more info on all sights and activities in Oslo and how to get there. Also check out the travel planner in Oslo, trafikanten.no (click on the British flag on the bottom left side of the page for information in English), which helps you find the right bus/tram/ferry to where you want to go.

Hovedøya island E-mail

Take the ferry to Monastery ruins on Hovedøya island (get up early in summertime, as it is a very popular spot) to one of the 40 islands in the Oslo fjord and see the ruins from the 12th century monastery, enjoy a stroll in the forest or relax at one of the many beaches on the island.

Camping is free on the neighbouring island Langøyene. The ruins of the monastery from 1100 are well worth a look in these peaceful surroundings (no cars here). Bring your own food and drink. There is drinking water, toilet facilities and a small kiosk on the island. Check Trafikanten.no for ferry times. The ferry ride is only 5 minutes, but huge crowds can easily mean you will have to wait for nearly 2 hours to get off the island at the same time as everybody else ...

Wildlife is abundant on Hovedøya. Please note that picking of flowers or plants is not allowed here.
