Welcome to Oslo!

Hope you'll have a wonderful time. Although nicknamed "the Tiger city" by one of our greatest writers, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, because it at the time seemed like a dangerous city that would eat a poor country boy alive, Oslo is one of the safest (but unfortunately also one of the most expensive) capitals in the world. Here you will find helpful information on sightseeing, living and working in Oslo as well as Oslo images from all seasons.

First Yankee Stadium, now this ... In October the honorable old ski jump Holmenkollen will be demolished and give way to a new one, which should be finished March 2010.

The beloved land mark and national symbol must give way to a more modern construction, housing 35 000 spectators and at last - an elevator for the jumpers! The cost is estimated to 920 million NOK (or around 160 million US dollars), but as with most public buildings I am confident the total cost will be at least 30 % higher ...

It will undoubtedly take some time before the new ski jump construction is completed, but hopefully it will be well worth the wait. Meanwhile, avid ski jumpers may find themselves passing the time by competing in online games at sites like http://www.poker.dk, or perhaps watching some of the great Norwegian films at the Cinemateket. However, you can bet they are looking forward to the renovations more than anyone, and it seems unlikely that they will be disappointed.

Anyway, it will be really strange not seeing the jump anymore, it is visible from most parts of the city center. Let's hope the new one makes an equally elegant profile!
